Doily Done!

It worked out to 11 inches square in size 20 thread. The directions claimed 7 1/2 inches square but they must have used a smaller thread.

There aren't a lot of tatted pineapple patterns available but I did find a few. Here is one by Doretha Albee, Pineapple Heaven, at Bellaonline.com.

There are six patterns HERE by Teri Dusenbury. They include a bag, some butterflies, and a doily.

There is a small project, an earring, by Sheron Goldin which can be found HERE. That's a good way to try out the technique if you haven't before.

Last night I started tatting the calf in Christel Weidmann's Farm Animals. The directions used RW (reverse work) in some spots so I assumed that unless RW was there, I shouldn't reverse work. I haven't gotten very far and apparently that assumption is wrong. I need to start over. There is a diagram too, and lots of color coding so I'm not sure why I'm confused. I've had this book for a long time and thought I should tat something from it! I love the calf and will probably also tat the cow and the bull if I can figure it out, but I especially like the rooster and have wanted to tat him for a long time. Wish me luck!

  3. I love square doilies and pineapples, but I've only ever crocheted them. This is lovely!

  4. Two words: AWESOME and BREATHTAKING! Beautifully done, and a nice size. I'll be interested to see how you showcase it!

For some reason the link to Doretha's pattern wouldn't open for me, but I found the pattern by typing "Doretha Albee" in Google search. It's also a beautiful doily.

Teri Dusenbury's patterns are also wonderful, and it's great to see her new website, where she again generously shares her patterns. I discovered the site a few months ago. She recently brought back her video tutorials for her Pineapple 'Treasure Bag', and it's fascinating to watch her tat. I now more fully understand her unique tatting terminology!

  6. That is so impressive, and thank you for the links to the other patterns.
Patterns can sometimes be confusing and so often I start one and just give up because either I don't understand the instructions or there are not enough, I have very little "tatting patience!"

  7. That is one of, if not THE, most beautiful doilies I have ever seen! It literally made me stop and stare before I read a thing! It's truly breathtaking and just... exquisite!!! I love it!

  8. Your doily is just gorgeous! And how nice of you to find patterns for the rest of us! I certainly hope to, one day, feel confident enough in my tatting to undertake something like that!

Good luck with the bovine family!

  11. Thank you for sharing the links. It is very difficult to find pineapple patterns.

I managed to contact the designer of this doily but I still have to get from Mary of KNOTS for the actual pattern. More waiting is seen over the horizon.

  14. Lovely doily! Camelia's pineapples are indeed amazing, and almost as impressive as her incredible dexterity in handling a Clover for twisting and joining. She makes it look so easy! I watch...I emulate....I bomb.

As someone who tatted the calf during a period of upheaval (while evacuated from the Jesusita fire), I can tell you that you just have to work from the diagram and do not over think it. The decision to reverse or not is based entirely on what will keep the work looking like the diagram. I'll look up my notes and message you if I find something else - there were a couple of glitches, if memory serves.

I'm late to the party to congratulate you on your remission and wish you many years of excellent health.

  18. Gorgeous piece! I'm working on a couple other doilies from Camelia. She does some fantastic ground-breaking work. Each one has something all new that I would have never thought of doing.
