Last weekend as I pawed through a storage container, I found lots of "stuff" that I'd bought at one time or another with something clearly in mind at the time. Hmmm....well, I'm not even sure which decade these spool dolls were popular in but I never made a single one. I just wanted to! I think it was in the 80's?
So when I found this package with the supplies to make two little dolls - well, I opened it right then and there and put them together.
Ta-Da! A naked Millie & Tillie who don't even have faces yet! This part was just way too easy. And really...I wondered, what am I going to do with them now?
I know...I'll have a giveaway, I thought. I'll put cute little dresses on them and give them faces and hair (since the curls were also in the box I was going through) and I'll give them away!
I'll spare you the details of clothing these lovely ladies, but it took three tries before I found something that sort of fit. The tatting part was the easiest bit of that too.
The faces were quick...a permanent ink pen and a bit of highlighter for the lips and eyes.
Now the hair....nearly had me pulling out my own! First of all, I've not used this hair stuff much at all. I put a curly beard on a Santa one time and that was pretty much it. Secondly, these babes had knots coming out of the top of their heads! Have you ever tried to disguise a knotty head? You can't cut those curls too long. They fall off before they dry. And when you have glue-ey fingers and you're trying to position a tender wisp of curl....FORGET IT!
Trust me on that one.
So...to sweeten the deal, the winners will each also get a Penny Pony to put together themselves!
Whoo Hoo! So just comment between now and 6:00 p.m. Sunday night (Eastern DST) and two random numbers will be picked to win a spool dolly and a candle cup pony kit! Make sure I have a way to contact you! I will not track you down - if there is not an email or google account to contact you with, I will go to the next random number.
Okay - two more insertions from Sharon's book. This is the clover insertion, made by tatting two clover edgings facing each other. Someone asked about this thread size which I used in an insertion in the last post. It's size 30.
And HERE we have a vine insertion! Do you see a pattern forming here? The edgings that I tatted before are being expanded or combined to make an insertion. I have one more to tat before moving on to motifs.

They are lovely little ladies and the horse looks awesome! I'd like to try and hope I win them!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen spool dollies in such a long time. I didn't know they had spoolie horses, too!
ReplyDeleteYour insertions look pretty! :)
Oh I just have to get in on this one! Those girls just make me smile. I hate HATE, absolutely despise gluey fingers; but your efforts were well worth it; their hair is FABULOUS!
ReplyDelete...and I LOVE the vine insertion; so striking in those colors.
Well I've got to enter this one. I'm SO intrigued to find out what a 'penny pony' is!!!! You know where to find me in your 'random number' thingy!!!!! lovetotat @ gmail.com!!!!
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhh how sweet...
ReplyDeleteMillie & Tillie are so cute! You dressed them like geishas!
Oh Gina, Millie & Tillie are just wonderful! I've never seen anything like them here in the UK but I wish I had. Loved the clothes, too, and don't worry about the 'gluey' hair - you can pretend it's hair spray!!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Chris.
Giggle! Giggle! I have one of those dolls (completed) somewhere around the house! Maybe if I take your lead and do some reorganizing, I'll find them! School starts in less than three weeks... should I clean, or should I tat? Hmm...
ReplyDeleteI love the insertions. I really should pull Sharon's book out and work on some. Sometimes I wish I had gobs of money so that I could have someone else do all the cooking and cleaning and I could spend my day tatting!
The dolls are so cute. I do not have Sharon's book and after seeing all your snipets, I want to invest in that book.

Your spoolie dolls are cute - I love the tatted accents on their dresses.
ReplyDeleteI remember making spoolie-angel ornaments for Christmas in the early 90's. I ended up with several bags of spools to make various sized angels - which didn't happen!
The spool dolls are so cute! You really did a good job - so now they are all dressed up and don't know where to go - yet!
ReplyDeleteThe insertions are very pretty. The blue and read vine insertion is my favorite. It is sort of mesmerizing!

I just found your blog a couple of days ago after I decided I wanted to learn to tat, so far the shuttle and I are have quite a time with each other. I think the shuttle is winning the battle, and I might have to try needle tatting 1st. Anyway I love your tatting, it is giving me inspiration to learn how to tat, keep those beautiful pics going to keep me inspired :)

I know I don't have a chance in H__ but here is my comment. I hope you did have a wonderful birthday. I keep trying myself to have a quiet day with NO TV just the sounds of nature making music for my ears. With husband home all the time now ( no job ) it is really hard to find that nature sounds.
ReplyDeletethe spool dolls are a curious thing with me--have never seen these. so cool! you did a great job putting them together actually.
ReplyDeletelove the colours you chose for the insertions. would love to see the complete products.
Well after all your efforts and gluey fingers, how could anyone resist your dolls, count me in!
ReplyDeleteThese insertions are so appealing. It occurs to me that I don't know what that means .... insertions.... Holes in garments were filled with these? Deliberate spaces in .... what.... for the decorative tatting? Help! What am I missing here? I have a whole library and I am asking this question? I shall check the books, of course....
ReplyDeleteI must find Sharon's book....
