Remember Chewie, my little 7# dynamo? The one who follows me from room to room, jumps up on the arm of my chair every chance she gets, sleeps by my face when I nap on the sofa...with the very matted fur because she is aging somewhat ungracefully?

I absolutely could not brush the mats out of her fur. It was actually felted in little knobs around her hips and under her neck and belly. I decided she needed shaved and we do have clippers but at her age, I felt it might be traumatic and made arrangements with the vet to sedate her before taking her to the groomer next door.

I'm told she woke up in the middle of the grooming but loved it and behaved beautifully. Well sure...she was still under the influence, so to speak. She also got her nails clipped and her ears cleaned out.

So...whaddya think?

She might weigh all of 6# now!

And I can't help but laugh every time I look at her! At least she is cooler, cleaner, and more comfortable.

She looks so funny! You mustn't laugh too much or she'll be embarrassed!

  2. Ha ha ha! With the heat we've been having, I'd like to at least shave my head.

Chewy probably thinks it feels good - she doesn't look embarassed either :)

  3. Oh, poor bald kitty...my oldest needs that too, but I probably won't do it. I guess at least Chewie is cool ;-)

  4. She may look a bit silly, but she doesn't know that, does she? And she must be feeling better in all that heat you guys have been having.

  5. I shave my long haired cat in summer too, she throws up trying to always groom with shedding so much with the heat. so each summer she is constantly shaved :), pretty much same job you gave yours :)

  6. Chewie does look strange. She must be feeling more comfortable now after her day at the 'spa'.

  7. At least she has pretty skin! As long as she feels cool and comfortable, having her shaved is worth all the trouble. Those pictures did make me laugh, though. :)

  8. AWWW she's adorable! It love when animals have silly haircuts. My cat might not have been so sweet in that situation, luckily she has short fur. Despite the nakedness, Chewie is still lovely. ^_^

    Love the end! muahaha....

  9. Oh the poor thing, she must feel better now, and cooler.
I did it once to my old dog she was a Lhasa Apso as they get old they take a dislike to grooming, one day I got so annoyed with her I just took the sisors and chopped. It did grow but I kept it short after that. I think she felt better with it short, Matted coats must weigh them down, I am sure she will look lovely when it grows a little longer.

  10. She looks like catdom's answer to French poodles!

Pet her for me and tell her she's beautiful! (She knows it already, but she'll enjoy hearing it from "Mom")

  12. I'm sure she's feeling better now. I know I feel better when I lose some of the extra hair on my head in the summer!

  13. I'm sure the short haircut helps in this heat! She does look a bit silly but I'm sure her new, untangled fur will feel much better to both her and you when it starts to cool off. Amazing the things we will do for our furry friends!

  14. Chewie certainly looks cooler. Comfort and cleanliness will make her feel better, even if she does look funny! I wonder with being shaved....does she like being petted now as much as when she had her fur?

  15. I know this was best for her, but it IS kind of startling! How long will it take to grow out? I just saw one of those TV ads for a 'vacuum' gizmo for pets that looks like an improvement over other methods of combing or brushing. Of course, it will take 'reviewers' to give a thumbs up or down.

    Poor black-and-white Kitty! She's a beauty!

  16. Yes, she still wants to be cuddled and petted. My son & I both noticed how warm her body was and don't know if it's an after effect of the sedation (they told me that would drop her body temperature temporarily) or if that's just how it felt under all that fur. I did notice she does not seem as restless and found her spot on the back of the chair and stayed there quite contentedly this morning.

  17. Ah, I think Chewie would be better over here at the moment as our cat is very upset at our return!!! First she didn't want to come home and when we got her home she's meaowed at us solidly all night and all day!!!!

  18. The extra warmth you're feeling when you touch her is just her normal body heat. You couldn't feel it through all the fur before. If you've ever felt a person's shaved head, you notice the same thing.

  19. Chewie looks like Sable did after her haircut...LOL Sable would hiss at me for days for cutting all her fur off. Thats what she gets for not letting me comb her daily.
Babe mu main coon cat loves for me to comb him. I can't do it until my stitches come off my eyes. Oh well, that is going to be a long day...LOL
